Description: Smart Alec-y Comeback
Have you wondered where the term "smart-aleck" came from. Here is a guess:
Alexander Woollcott, a writer in the first half of this century, was
sometimes called the "smartest of Alecs". Just to show you what a
smart-aleck he was, how's this: He was telling a story at a class reunion.
He was interrupted by a fellow alumnus who said, "Hello, Alex! You remember
me, don't you?"
"I can't remember your name," sniffed Woollcott, "but don't tell me."
